Classical Mythology

  • Bullfinch's Mythology
    Contains the complete text of Thomas Bullfinch's Age of Fable, Age of Chivalry, and Legends of Charlemagne—taken together, one of the classic compendiums of Roman and Greek mythology and Arthurian legend and romance. Tales are linked to each other within the site for quick cross-referencing.
  • Encyclopedia Mythica
    Almost 6,500 short entries, featuring mythologies from every continent on the planet. Fully searchable, with copious cross-links to Bullfinch where appropriate. An excellent starting place for mythological research.
  • Classical Myth: The Ancient Sources
    Only contains information about the major Olympians (for now?), but has links to the original sources for stories about each god/goddess at The Perseus Project, which can be pretty daunting to search through on your own. A good resource if you're doing heavy research about the Olympians.
  • The Mythman's Myth Mania
    Nick Pontikis' lighthearted look at Greek mythology. Features his own retelling of myths in the Myth of the Month, as well as an extensive Homework Help section.
  • Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology
    Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology is a 3,700-page compendium of 19th century classical scholarship. The Dictionary covers a dazzling array of historical characters, authors, gods and heroes in great detail and depth. (Online at The Ancient Library, a new and growing resource.)

Urban Legends

  • Urban Legends Reference Pages (Snopes.com)
    This is one of the most thorough Urban Legend sites I've found. Use it to check out the validity of all that crap that ends up in your inbox—the site has gobs of information on urban legends of the past, as well as those currently circulating. (It's also great fun to browse around in!)
  • Hoaxbusters
    Somehow related to the U.S. Department of Energy, this is another great spot to keep updated on the latest bogus emails in circulation.
  • The Urban Legend Combat Kit
    "The Urban Legend Combat Kit is a free collection of canned responses to help you combat Internet myths and urban legends. When someone sends you an urban legend, just cut and paste the appropriate response from this site."
  • TruthOrFiction.com
    Another good searchable resource. Their section entitled Anatomy of a Rumor is especially interesting.
